Melbourne Storm’s promising halfback, Jonah Pezet, has responded to comments from Roosters hooker Brandon Smith, who took another shot at his former club in light of Pezet’s decision to re-sign with the Storm. Despite being heavily courted by the Newcastle Knights, who reportedly offered him a $2.5 million deal and even brought in club captain Kalyn Ponga to meet with the 21-year-old, Pezet opted to remain loyal to Melbourne.
Pezet, who is still behind established stars like Jahrome Hughes, Cameron Munster, and Tyran Wishart in the Storm’s halfback rotation, revealed that his new contract includes a clause allowing him to break the deal if Hughes re-signs with the club. Although Pezet has only played 10 first-grade games to date, including three in 2024 before suffering an ACL injury, the Storm has shown faith in his development since bringing him from the Newcastle region in 2021.
Smith, who spent time at the Storm before moving to the Roosters, expressed confusion over Pezet’s decision to stay at Melbourne, especially given the stiff competition for spots. In a pointed remark, Smith questioned why the young halfback would stay in such a situation instead of pursuing a starting role at another club like Newcastle.
However, Pezet firmly rebutted Smith’s remarks, emphasizing his strong bond with Melbourne and the patience the club has shown him throughout his journey. “Melbourne has been patient with me, and I can’t betray the club that has supported me so much,” Pezet said. “I’m happy here, and this is where I want to continue my development.”
Pezet’s commitment to the Storm has made waves in the NRL, with many impressed by his loyalty and maturity despite the tempting offers from elsewhere.
