Buffalo — In a deeply emotional revelation, Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin has shared that his fiancée, Carolina Matovac, underwent a life-saving heart transplant this offseason after suffering from major heart failure. The shocking ordeal nearly claimed her life but has now become a story of resilience, hope, and unwavering love.
The Sabres released Dahlin’s heartfelt letter to fans on Friday morning, recounting the harrowing weeks the couple endured in France, where Carolina fell gravely ill.
“She had felt sick for a few days before things suddenly spiraled out of control,” Dahlin wrote. “Fortunately, she received CPR on multiple occasions; at times lasting for hours, which ultimately saved her life. Without those lifesaving efforts, the result would have been unimaginable. It is hard to even think about the worst-case scenario.”
Doctors determined Carolina’s only chance at survival was a new heart. After weeks on life support in a French hospital, a match was found giving her a second chance at life.
“Without the incredible commitment, expertise, care, and sensitivity of all the people who treated Carolina, we would not be in the position we are in today,” Dahlin shared with gratitude. “She is now recovering well and on the path to a full recovery.”
The Swedish defenseman selected first overall in the 2018 NHL Draft and now wearing the “C” as Buffalo’s captain praised Carolina’s unbreakable spirit throughout the ordeal.
“While Carolina is still working through her rehab to return to Buffalo, she has shown incredible determination, positivity, and resilience,” Dahlin wrote. “I am in awe of her strength.”
He also extended his thanks to Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula, as well as the entire organization, for standing by him during the most challenging chapter of his life.
The timing of the ordeal coincided with a critical offseason for Dahlin, but despite carrying the weight of personal tragedy, he has reported to training camp and remains a visible leader for Buffalo. Still, it is clear that his priorities extend far beyond the rink.
“This has undoubtedly been the most difficult experience we have ever faced,” Dahlin said. “But it is also something that has taught us so much about life, love, and perseverance.”
As Carolina continues her rehabilitation, Sabres Nation has rallied around their captain and his fiancée, offering messages of support and hope. While the 24-year-old defenseman prepares to lead Buffalo into a season brimming with high expectations, the greatest victory has already been won, Carolina’s fight for her life.
For Dahlin and Matovac, the road forward will still demand patience and courage. But in the face of unimaginable fear, their story has already become one of triumph.
