In the wake of a turbulent 64-0 defeat to the Melbourne Storm that sent shockwaves through the Wests Tigers fanbase, a social media post from Jarome Luai’s father, Martin Luai, ignited an unexpected controversy over the star playmaker’s future at the club. But Martin Luai has since moved to douse the flames, issuing a firm and heartfelt assurance to Tigers supporters: his son is focused, loyal, and fully committed to delivering success in Concord.
The now-deleted post, which read “Get out clause activated” accompanied by an eyes emoji and facepalm emoji, raised eyebrows and stirred panic among the Tigers faithful. The message appeared to reference a much-publicised clause in Jarome Luai’s five-year, $6 million contract that gives him player options for the final three years (2027-2029). In essence, the deal could realistically be a two-year arrangement, allowing Luai to explore options elsewhere from November 1, 2025.
But according to Martin Luai, the post was never intended to trigger such reaction or speculation.
Speaking to Channel 9, Martin clarified: “It was just a bit of banter between family and friends. Somehow it got into the hands of the media, who screenshot it and sent it to Romey’s management. I was told about it—not from anyone at the club—and, on my own accord, as I was made aware of the media’s intentions to make it public, I removed it from socials.”
In the same statement, Martin went a step further to address the uncertainty that followed his post:
“I want to assure the Wests Tigers fans that I’ll personally ensure my son remains committed to the club. Jarome is focused, he’s happy, and he’s ready to bring success. There’s no reason for panic.”
Phil Gould, the respected rugby league administrator and commentator, offered a strong defence of Martin Luai on 100% Footy. Having worked closely with the Luai family during his tenure as general manager at the Penrith Panthers, Gould vouched for Martin’s character.
“He’s a good man,” Gould said. “He would’ve never meant for that to be public. There’s absolutely nothing bubbling away with Jarome in terms of leaving the Tigers. This is not a story. It was an innocent joke that unfortunately went viral.”
Gould, who was instrumental in the development of Penrith’s premiership-winning core—including Luai and Nathan Cleary—also reaffirmed his belief that Jarome’s commitment to the Tigers is genuine.
Jarome himself addressed the situation publicly, brushing aside concerns of an early exit and expressing full dedication to the Wests Tigers’ long-term vision.
“That was negotiated by my management team,” Luai said of the contract clauses. “If you have a good agent, then their best interest is the player. I’m locked into the club and bringing success to this team. If you’re a Tigers fan, be excited for years to come. I’m all in. That’s the kind of man I’ve been.”
The Tigers, currently enduring a difficult stretch in the NRL, are hoping that Luai’s arrival will spearhead a cultural and performance turnaround. His proven pedigree as a three-time premiership winner with the Panthers and a State of Origin representative makes him one of the club’s most significant signings in years.
The Tigers have privately downplayed the social media post, taking comfort in the clear and consistent messages from both father and son.
Ultimately, in a sport where passion, pressure, and media scrutiny often collide, the Luai family have shown transparency and accountability. Tigers fans, for now, can rest easy knowing that one of rugby league’s brightest stars remains firmly in their corner—backed by the unwavering belief of his father and the full weight of his own conviction.
