Sydney Roosters’ rising stars are thrilled to have been called upon for greater responsibilities in the upcoming NRL season. With the club’s development list confirmed for 2024, Benaiah Ioelu, Hugo Savala, Jake Elliott, and Reece Foley are all excited to contribute to the team’s success. Despite the challenges ahead, the four young players have vowed to give their all, with a shared goal of helping the Roosters secure the desired results.
According to the NRL’s Signing Tracker on NRL.com, the development players have been given a significant opportunity to prove themselves next season. Among them is Benaiah Ioelu, who made his mark in the NSW Cup last season, playing ten reserve-grade games after debuting in 2023. With veteran hooker Brandon Smith out for most of the year, Ioelu will compete with Tyler Moriarty for the back-up hooker position, offering the Roosters a dynamic interchange option alongside Connor Watson, who is set to take on the starting role.
Meanwhile, halfback Hugo Savala has made the bold decision to stay at Bondi after speculation linking him to a move to the Gold Coast Titans. His impressive performances in the NSW Cup, including seven tries and seven try assists in 21 games, earned him a two-year development deal. The young playmaker is determined to continue his growth and bring valuable support to the Roosters’ playmaking options.
Jake Elliott, the U19s NSW Blues five-eighth, is another promising talent on the development list for 2024 and beyond. Elliott stood out with a stellar NSW Cup season in 2024, racking up 28 points, four drop-outs, and a remarkable 17 try assists in just 14 matches. With Sam Walker sidelined for the first half of next season due to an ACL injury, Elliott’s versatility in the halves will be vital, especially as he aims to make a mark in the NRL.
Reece Foley, who has shown great potential as a utility back, is also ready to rise to the challenge. After making nine appearances in the reserve-grade competition and even being named on the reserves list for the NRL squad, Foley’s versatility could see him called upon in the halves or other positions as needed.
The four youngsters have expressed their joy at being given the chance to be part of the Roosters’ future. “I’m beyond excited for the opportunity and I’m ready to put in the work,” said Ioelu. “I’m determined to contribute to the team’s success and show what I can do at the NRL level.”
Savala shared similar sentiments, adding, “It’s been a big year, and I’m thankful to have earned the chance to stay at this great club. I’ll do everything I can to help the team win.”
The Roosters’ development list reflects the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent, and the players are eager to prove they are ready to take on bigger roles. Fans can expect to see a new wave of energy and determination as these rising stars aim to leave their mark on the NRL in 2025 and beyond.
