Melbourne Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen has committed his future to the club, signing a one-year contract extension that will see him stay in Victoria until at least the end of the 2026 NRL season. The decision comes despite substantial offers from other clubs, including the Canterbury Bulldogs, who were reportedly willing to pay over $1 million per season—$300,000 more than what Melbourne offered.
Papenhuyzen, who has battled injury woes in recent seasons, expressed his deep gratitude for the patience and belief shown by Melbourne throughout his recovery. He admitted that, despite the lucrative offers, he couldn’t bring himself to betray the club that has supported him through thick and thin.
“It was the best decision I made,” Papenhuyzen said of his contract extension. “Melbourne has always had faith in me, especially when I was going through my injury struggles. I couldn’t let them down. I feel like we’re building something special here, and I have a real drive to see that through.”
Papenhuyzen also spoke about the Storm’s strong core group and the potential for future success. “We’ve had the core group of our squad together for a while now, and we’ve played a lot of footy alongside each other. To stay in Melbourne and hopefully enjoy success together is something that motivates me,” he added.
The fullback, who is poised for a return to the field after his injury setbacks, is eager for the upcoming season and the chance to play in front of a packed AAMI Park. “I’m excited for the season ahead and can’t wait to be back out on the field in front of a packed house at AAMI Park come Round 1,” he said.
Papenhuyzen’s commitment is a huge boost for Melbourne, ensuring they retain one of the NRL’s most electrifying players and continue their push for another premiership in the years ahead.
