Melbourne Storm’s star fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen is nearing a one-year contract extension with the club, following positive discussions and growing confidence in the deal. Despite the prospect of less money and the rise of young player Sua Fa’alogo, Papenhuyzen, who has faced recent injury setbacks, is reportedly ready to re-sign. Melbourne Storm’s CEO, Justin Rodski, shared the optimism during a media conference, emphasizing that multiple contract options are being discussed but the club is increasingly confident in securing Papenhuyzen’s future.
Rodski highlighted that one option on the table is a one-year extension, which would leave Papenhuyzen in a similar position come 2025, potentially facing free agency after a full season of play, having missed much of the last two campaigns due to injuries. Despite the challenge of accommodating both Papenhuyzen and rising star Fa’alogo, who is contracted long-term but may test the market in 2026, the Storm are hopeful of keeping both players.
Rodski reaffirmed Fa’alogo’s place in the team, confirming the club’s commitment to his development and their intent to give him plenty of opportunities in 2025, regardless of Papenhuyzen’s contract situation. The Storm are confident they can balance both players’ futures without needing to make any player swaps or releases.
