AFL great Gerard Healy has sparked speculation about Joe Daniher’s future, suggesting that the Brisbane Lions should keep some salary cap space open for 2026, as he believes the star forward could backflip on his decision to retire.
Daniher, 30, announced his retirement just five days after playing a pivotal role in Brisbane’s emphatic 60-point AFL Grand Final victory over the Sydney Swans. The forward, who kicked two goals in the decider, made the shock call to walk away from the final year of his contract, leaving around $750,000 on the table. His emotional celebration after kicking his second goal in the Grand Final was seen by many as a symbolic farewell to the game, but Healy isn’t convinced that Daniher’s career is truly over.
“He’s leaving on a high, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him back,” Healy told SEN’s Innernewsport. “Joe was playing the best footy of his career and he was unlucky not to be named All-Australian in the past couple of years. His role as a forward-ruckman was pivotal for Brisbane, and I think it’s gone underappreciated.”
Daniher, who has played 204 games and kicked 395 goals, had an outstanding 2024 season, culminating in a crucial part in the Lions’ first AFL Premiership since 2003. His decision to retire came at the peak of his career, leading many to wonder if the timing was right. Healy believes that Daniher, who has had his share of injury setbacks, may eventually miss the game too much.
“I think Joe might have another think about it. The grass on the other side is green for a while, but it goes brown pretty quick,” Healy added. “I wouldn’t be shocked to see him waltz back into Chris Fagan’s office in 2026 and say, ‘I’m back.’ He’ll take a year off, recharge, and then maybe reconsider his decision.”
Healy’s comments have added fuel to speculation that Daniher could return to the game after a break. Despite the emotional exit, the forward’s role in Brisbane’s AFL renaissance, particularly his All-Australian selection in 2024 and Grand Final performance, suggests that he might still have more to give.
While Daniher’s retirement has been celebrated as the perfect ending to a stellar career, Healy’s comments highlight that the door could still be open for the AFL star to make a comeback. For now, Daniher is taking a step back, but whether his career is truly over remains an intriguing question for AFL fans.
